What kind of metallic finishes are available on your trophies?
With our method we create a finish of the finest and crispest detail which is virtually undistinguishable from foundry-made solid bronzes. You can choose from two finishes:
Traditional bright bronze finish - this produces a lovely, deep shine which captures the light beautifully on a sunny day or can brighten up a room on a dull one. Most of the trophies on our website are featured in this colour - for examples see
Patination - this centuries-old technique produces a finish such as that found on the lions of Trafalgar Square, London, or most other large public statues. Patination adds a further element of originality and costs an additional 15%.
What have you got to celebrate a Hole-in-One triumph?
A golfer who is keeping their Hole-in-One ball for posterity can prolong the moment of glory even further by letting us mount this memorable ball on green Lakeland slate, black Lakeland slate and granite bases.
What techniques and processes are used to make a trophy from the current collection?
At Thomas & Peters we use a unique multi-stage process called Float Bronze to create our beautiful sculptures. Float Bronze is a Registered Trademark.
All our crafts-people have a high level of training and experience - producing our high-quality trophies demands a special combination of creative and technical skills.
The first stage in producing one of our trophies is to create the real bronze shell using a silicone rubber mould which is encased with plaster and Paris. The mould is split into as many pieces as is necessary to release the figure after casting - the number of pieces depends on how complex the piece is - and these fit together like a 3D jigsaw puzzle.
We use real bronze powder mixed to a paste using a small quantity of another secret ingredient, which we hand-paint inside a silicone rubber mould. This effectively creates a bronze 'casing' around 4mm thick - every crevice and corner must have this level of coverage so our trademark finish can be created.
We then wait for this shell to harden, after which it is filled with a stone and resin which helps create the solid, enduring quality of a Thomas & Peters trophy. This amalgam is re-inforced with steel armatures through all critical points of the figure, then 24 hours is allowed for the piece to become fully set.
The next stage is to carefully dismantle the mould to reveal the figure - at this stage the trophy will look quite rough and ready. Now work continues on the piece until its real beauty starts to gradually show through.
Newly-cast pieces are covered with impurities which give them a dull brown appearance, we remove these using micro-sized aluminium oxide powder, taking great care not to diminish any of the fine detail during blasting. This can be a noisy process and ear mufflers and goggles are compulsory!
Next the shine of the trophy is brought out, using high-speed mechanical polishing mops and hand-polishing, using abrasives.
The next stage is mounting the work on their stone bases in just the right position and where required adding mahogany bases. If the figure is a golfer with a club or another delicate detail, this will be added at this stage.
The final touch is adding the engraved plate which describes your event, the name of your club, your club logo or corporate logo, the name of memorial trophies, class of event, Winners' names.
The final product is a unique and genuinely hand-made item which is unrivalled in quality and craftsmanship, which will lend an enduring dignity and splendour to any trophy cabinet or mantelpiece.
How do you make a new figure, trophy or commission?
Each of our figures starts life as a lump of clay and an idea in my mind. Creating a new sculpture can take weeks or even months because we put quality and artistic perfection first.
My first step when I am creating a new piece for the collection or as a commission is to hand-sculpt the original from clay. Be it a golfer at the end of a perfectly-executed drive or reclining at the end of a satisfying ground with his golf bag as a headrest, a perfect miniaturisation of golf shoes and putter, a study of a woman golfer crouching with her putter or a statuette of Ben Hogan or Bobby Jones, detail is the key.
Getting the details right can be one of the most rewarding parts of my work. From the look of concentration on a golfer's face to the creases in their trousers, these details help give Thomas & Peters' trophies their unique quality.
Once I have finished making the statue using the traditional clay-sculpting methods, if I am working on a commission I will present the piece to the client for their comments and make any changes to make sure they are satisfied.
The next step is to create the mould. I coat the clay original with a total of about seven layers silicone rubber paste, a painstaking process which takes eight working days. Each layer has to be allowed to set before the next can be applied.
Once the silicone mould is thick enough - between 1.75cms and 2.5cms depending on the size and complexity of the sculpture - the mould is then encased in a plaster of Paris jacket made in as many pieces as necessary to release the mould after casting - these fit together like a 3D jigsaw puzzle.
The mould is now ready, and the creation of a bronze statue can begin
